Mechanism of action and physiological effects of Silabaal® on plants

Silabaal® takes a direct, mineral-based approach: the goal is to reach the plant through the leaf surface and support its natural physiological processes – for a more vigorous plant, higher stress tolerance and improved product quality.

The mechanism in three steps

01

Activated mineral

Silabaal® is based on tribomechanically activated calcite (calcium/magnesium carbonate) combined with zeolite. This special activation breaks the mineral components down into very fine particles, creating a particularly large active surface area.

02

Contact through the leaf

When applied to the plant’s surface, the fine mineral particles can come into contact with the leaf tissue and, in particular, with the stomata. This enables direct interaction with the plant – independent of uptake through the soil.

03

Calcium supports the plant

Calcium plays an important role in the stability and function of plant cell structures. It is also closely linked to the regulation of the stomata and thus to the control of the plant’s water balance.

Cross-section of a leaf: Silabaal® ((Ca,Mg)CO₃) enters the leaf through the stoma.

Silabaal® is atomised over the leaf surface and enters the leaf through the stomata.

Observed effects

Under suitable conditions, Silabaal® can help support the plants’ resilience to high temperatures and other abiotic stress factors. Observations and experimental results also indicate an improvement in various parameters:

More intense green colour and improved leaf development

Greater resistance to heat and drought stress

Improved plant vitality

Potential improvement in fruit quality

Increased levels of certain plant compounds

Changes in the dry matter content of the fruit

Example: tomatoes

In crops such as tomatoes, an adequate supply of calcium can help reduce physiological disorders such as blossom end rot – provided these are caused by an insufficient or disrupted supply of calcium to the fruit.

Studies

Studies on treated plants show changes in leaf and fruit physiology, including chloroplast development, polyphenol content and dry matter content.

Conclusion

Silabaal® is not aimed exclusively at nutrient supply, but can support the plant’s physiological performance and its adaptation to environmental stress.
